Rufus King recaptures title in MPS Battle of the Drumlines

MPS Battle of the DrumlinesThe Rufus King gymnasium was filled with heart-pounding excitement on December 10 as drumlines from across MPS competed in the 20th annual Battle of the Drumlines. Defending champions Rufus King faced off against Reagan and Riverside for 2022 bragging rights. Scores were close, but in the end, the trophy stayed with King – their 15th time winning the competition!

During the event, each group performs several numbers to show off their synchronization, stick tricks, marching, and some dance moves while they play. Drumlines from MacDowell Montessori and Parkside School for the Arts were also part of the program, performing in a noncompetitive exhibition category. As a special treat, the Milwaukee Hittaz Drum Corp. [sic], a band made up mostly of MPS alumni, also performed to share their continuing love of music with students and families.

This is the second Battle of the Drumlines competition since in-person events returned from virtual learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Organizers are hoping that the number of student performers will grow each year.

“The pandemic affected instrumental music programs quite a bit. This year, we have twice as many drumlines compared to last year, and I hope that trend will continue next year,” said Sharie Garcia, district music curriculum specialist.

MPS is investing in new programs to help students access the arts and to grow a love of music. The district has expanded its music programs, hiring dozens of new music teachers.
