COVID-19 Update

The City of Milwaukee Health Department has updated their orders including the restrictions on team sports. The order now reads as follows:

2.m. Recreation Activities. Recreation activities in which Physical Distancing and Protective Measure Requirements can be achieved will be allowed with the following restrictions in place: i. Team and contact sports and recreation activities are prohibited with the exception of sports teams and leagues that have COVID-19 safety plans approved by the Milwaukee Health Department; continued compliance with the plans are required or approval is revoked.

Here is what this means for outdoor facility permits:

Organizational League Play/Competition-Based Permits

Groups submitting a permit application for an outdoor facility for a sport league or competition may only do so for Milwaukee Recreation-approved sports. This approval is based on each sport’s inherent ability to physically distance and apply protective measures.

Sport leagues or competitions NOT ELIGIBLE for approved field/court space include, but are not limited to: basketball, flag football, tackle football, rugby, and soccer. All other sports may be eligible for approved field/court space.

Upon initial approval by Milwaukee Recreation, the group must then submit a COVID-19 safety plan to the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Final approval is contingent on approval of the group’s plan by the Health Department.

Group Practices/Skills-Based Permits

Groups submitting a permit application for an outdoor facility for a sport practice or skill-based activity may do so for any sport. All sports are eligible for field/court space for practices or skill-based activities.

Upon initial approval by Milwaukee Recreation, the group must then submit a COVID-19 safety plan to the City of Milwaukee Health Department. Final approval is contingent on approval of the group’s plan by the Health Department.

Four-Step Permit Approval Process for Fall 2020

  1. Complete the permit application and submit to the Adult Sports and Permit Office.
  2. Upon initial approval from MKE Rec, submit a COVID-19 safety plan to the Health Department. *
  3. If group can show approval status from the Health Department, their permit application will be approved.
  4. (Optional) Submit certificate of liability certificate when mandatory.

* COVID-19 Safety Plans should be submitted via email to CEHAdmin (cehadmin@milwaukee.gov); Claire Evers (cevers@milwaukee.gov); or Lilliann Paine (lipaine@milwaukee.gov).

Please copy Megan Frey (Megan@mkerec.net) on all COVID-10 safety plan messages.

Note: Milwaukee Recreation will not actively monitor compliance of groups who have approved COVID-19 safety plans and permits. If non-compliance is reported, the permit holder will be contacted and issued a warning by Milwaukee Recreation. If non-compliance continues, the City of Milwaukee Health Department will be contacted to discuss possible revocation of approval and thus, cancelation of the permit.
