On Thursday, Dec. 19, the Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) Board of Directors approved Brian D. Litzsey, M.S. Ed., MBA, as the new senior director of Milwaukee Recreation. Litzsey, who is currently the department’s manager of operations, will move into the role on Jan. 20, 2025. He will succeed Lynn A. Greb, who is retiring in January after 36 years with the department.

  Congratulations to Anna Torres, clerical staff member for Milwaukee Recreation and the Milwaukee City Conference, on her upcoming retirement! Anna began her career with Milwaukee Public Schools in 1982, providing clerical support in the MPS departments of Administrative Services and Student Services. She joined Milwaukee Recreation in 1985, and one of her first responsibilities was managing an ink printing press!

  Congratulations to Helen Hamilton, 21st CCLCs & Safe Places Supervisor for Milwaukee Recreation, on her upcoming retirement! Originally from Macon, Ga., Helen moved to Milwaukee in 1987 following her husband’s recruitment to work for MPS. In 1998, Helen was hired to open and manage the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) at John Burroughs Middle School and later worked with the Silver Spring Neighborhood Center to run the CLC at John Muir Middle School (now Carmen Northwest Middle/High School).

  Happy Lynn Greb Day! Please join us and the City of Milwaukee in celebrating Lynn Greb’s exemplary career as she retires from Milwaukee Recreation following 36 impactful years with our department, including the past 10 years as senior director.  Mayor Cavalier Johnson has officially proclaimed Jan. 31, 2025 to be Lynn Greb Day in honor of Lynn's indelible contributions to our city!   Clementine “Clem” Allen, a longtime staff member with Milwaukee Recreation, has been named the 2024 Barbara Leszczynski Customer Service Award winner! This award, now in its 15th year, is named after Barbara Leszczynski, a former Milwaukee Recreation clerical team member known for her empathy and customer service.   After nearly 20 years, Milwaukee Recreation’s Daddy/Daughter Dance continues to be one of the city’s most cherished traditions. Hundreds of daughters, fathers, and father-figures attend every year to treat one another to an unforgettable evening dedicated to celebrating one another.  This year's dance is expected to be one of the most magical yet, as it will be held in downtown Milwaukee at the newly revamped Baird Center, Wisconsin’s premier convention center!

  Throughout the school year, Milwaukee Recreation is using critical water safety lessons to build upon the traditional school curriculum for third grade students in Milwaukee Public Schools. After working with community partner organizations to introduce a pilot program several years ago, Milwaukee Recreation is now leading a water safety program for third grade students from participating MPS schools. In fall 2024, students from Forest Home Avenue School, Allen-Field Elementary School, La Escuela Fratney, and Gaenslen School participated in introductory swim lessons with certified water safety instructors and lifeguards at South Division High School and Gaenslen School.
