  The garden outside Milwaukee Recreation’s Beulah Brinton Community Center is blooming with new life, thanks to a grant awarded to community member and Milwaukee Recreation participant Angie Tornes.  The grant, funded by the City of Milwaukee Neighborhood Improvement Development Corporation, was used to transform a mostly vacant garden bed outside the main entrance to Beulah Brinton Community Center into a self-sustaining pollinator garden for birds, butterflies, moths, and bees.

  On Tuesday, July 8, Milwaukee Recreation celebrated the grand reopening of Modrzejewski Playfield alongside community members and local leaders! The completion of Modrzejewski Playfield (1020 W. Cleveland Ave.) marks Milwaukee Recreation’s 11th full-site renovation throughout the city, in addition to a 2020 tot lot renovation at Ohio Playfield. With each renovation, Milwaukee Recreation works to prioritize the needs of the surrounding community first, ensuring that each playfield leaves a lasting impact on community members for years to come.

  In October 2024, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction invited Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLCs) from around the state to participate in a STEM challenge hosted by NASA. Four Milwaukee Recreation program locations with age-eligible students in grades 6-8 – Clarke Street School, Hayes School, Holmes School, and Longfellow School – applied and were selected by the DPI to participate in this project.

  Washington High School seniors Xavier Goff and Rionne Turner had the experience of a lifetime at the 2025 NFL Draft! Goff, a Special Olympics athlete, and Turner, a Unified Partner, represented Special Olympics North America and Wisconsin’s Unified Sports as they announced the 38th pick in the NFL Draft on Friday, April 25. After an introduction from NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, Goff took the microphone to kick off the New England Patriots' selection.
