Volunteer with Milwaukee Recreation

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Milwaukee Recreation! Our volunteers help create inclusive, engaging, and enriching recreational experiences that connect and empower Milwaukee residents of all ages. Because Milwaukee Recreation is part of Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), all ongoing volunteers must follow the MPS volunteer application and approval process.

Who Needs to Apply

• Ongoing or repeat volunteers (including sports coaches, after-school program assistants, and recurring volunteers for events) must complete the MPS application and background check.
• One-time event volunteers do not need to apply.

How It Works

• Complete the MPS Volunteer Application. 
• When prompted, select the appropriate Milwaukee Recreation volunteer option. This ensures your application is routed correctly to our department.

Background Check

• Your background check will be reviewed and processed by MPS.

Approval Notification

• Once approved, you’ll receive an email from MPS confirming your volunteer clearance. Important: You must receive this official approval email from MPS before you can begin volunteering, regardless of any other communication.

Start Volunteering

• After approval, contact your Milwaukee Recreation program coordinator or event lead to schedule your volunteer service.

• Full name, contact info, and emergency contact.
• Address and zip code.
• Availability and volunteer interests (select “Milwaukee Recreation”).
• Prior volunteer experience or skills.
• Social security number and consent for background check.
• Agreement to policies/code of conduct.
• Minor status info (if under 18 years old).
