MPS Softball Umpires & Officials Clinic

Umpire Behind the Plate at High School Softball Game

MPS Athletics is hosting a Softball Officials & Umpires clinic ahead of the spring season! The clinic experience features classroom discussion and on-the-diamond demonstrations, and will review plate & base mechanics, umpire responsibilities, lineup card management, 2023 rule changes, and official softball signals.

Our clinic instructors will also dive into WIAA credit and how to become an MPS official.

  • When: Saturday, March 25
  • When: 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.
  • Cost: FREE
  • Where: Vincent High School (7501 N. Granville Rd.)

This clinic is open to participants who are interested in umpiring softball at all levels.

Lunch will be included. Register by March 21 to secure a lunch.

9-9:30 a.m. - Registration & Introduction

9:30-10:30 a.m. - 2023 Rule Changes, Point of Emphasis, NFHS Softball Signals, Responsibilities of Plate & Base Umpire

10:30-11:30 a.m. - Pregame Conference/Meeting with Coaches (Ground Rules), Lineup Card Management, Communication with Coaches, Positioning and Base Coverage, Plate & Base Mechanics, Uniform/Equipment Expectations, Improve the Quality and Consistency of Officiating

11:30 a.m. - 12 p.m. Lunch Break

12-2 p.m. - Diamond Instruction: This session of the clinic will include a varsity high school pitcher, catcher, and baserunner for the campers to get "LIVE" plate and base umpiring instructions. We will be covering: Positioning and Coverage, Plate & Base Mechanics, and Softball Signals (Plate & Base).
