Milwaukee Recreation celebrates Arbor Day at Custer Playfield

Volunteers at Custer Playfield

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Arbor Day, Milwaukee Recreation partnered with U.S. Bank and the Arbor Day Foundation to plant trees at Custer Playfield on Friday, April 29.

Volunteers painted cabinets inside the fieldhouse and helped plant trees along the playfield's walking path.

Custer Playfield (4001 W. Custer Ave.) was renovated in 2019 as part of Milwaukee Recreation's "Dream Build Play" initiative. Upgrades included basketball courts, new playground equipment, and a walking trail. However, additional funding was needed to provide tree planting throughout the playfield.

“We are grateful for the support from U.S. Bank and the Arbor Day Foundation in providing us with the resources to plant trees at Custer Playfield,” said Lynn Greb - Senior Director, Milwaukee Recreation. “The trees will enhance the playfield and provide much needed shade to the area.

New trees were planted as part of recovery efforts due to Emerald Ash Borer.

"It is giving attention to this community," U.S. Bank volunteer Patricia Matthews said. "Showing that other people - Milwaukee Recreation, U.S. Bank, and other larger organizations - care about this community. When you’ve got the volunteers and everyone out here, I just think that shows that this community, if they’re looking out of windows or driving by, that other people care."

Thank you to our partners and volunteers for supporting our community!
