MPS student-athletes continue to represent the district well as they build friendships, learn new skills, and create lifelong memories! As we hit the stretch run of the winter season, several student-athletes have accomplished major feats worthy of recognition.
Ziyad Saleem, King Swim
On Saturday, Feb. 22, Rufus King junior Ziyad Saleem finished first in the 100-yard backstroke at the Wisconsin State Tournament.
Saleem was the top seed entering the race, but had to make a furious comeback in the final stretch to take gold. Saleem posted a time of 49.30, and is the City Conference's first swim state champion since King's Cassy Jernberg in 2016.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Mark Stewart featured Saleem over the weekend. Congratulations, Ziyad!
Marchelle Bowden, Hamilton Basketball
On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Marchelle Bowden, a junior on the Hamilton girls basketball team, joined a select group of elite high school athletes by scoring her 1,000 career point in a 56-48 win over Reagan.
In addition to her achievements on the basketball court, Marchelle is ranked fifth in her class and is being recruited by several Division-1 schools.
Bowden is averaging nearly 19 points per game this season for Hamilton (11-11, 5-7 City Conference). Congratulations, Marchelle!
King Cheer Squad
On Saturday, Feb. 1, the Rufus King varsity cheer team finished second in the Game Day division at the Brookfield Blast Cheerleading competition. Over 40 schools competed at Brookfield Central High School.
King also qualified for the WACPC State Tournament for the 10th straight year, where they participated in the Cheer Dance division with 18 other schools.
Congratulations to the 2019-20 King Cheer Squad!
