10,000th MPS Drive participant earns probationary license

MPS Drive students

Milwaukee Public Schools and Milwaukee Recreation have now helped over 10,000 participants earn their probationary license and practice safe driving since launching the MPS Drive initiative in 2016.

Through the MPS Drive program, MPS and Milwaukee Recreation provide currently enrolled MPS students between the ages of 15-17.5 with low-cost driver education. The course is free for all age-eligible students, with only a $35 fee due for a temporary driver's permit. The course can be taken in an online, hybrid, or in-person setting, featuring 30 hours of instruction and behind-the-wheel training.

"Reaching the 10K milestone in probationary licenses obtained by teens who have participated in the MPS Drive program showcases the positive results a driver education program can have when restrictive barriers, such as cost, are removed from the equation," recreation manager Nicole Jacobson said. "Our ultimate goal is to have every MPS student graduate with a high school diploma in one hand and a valid driver license in the other. "

Registration for the winter/spring MPS Drive session is now open. Register online today.
