MILWAUKEE RECREATION
LAUNCHES RSS NEWSFEED
Really Simple Syndication expands communication efforts
Milwaukee Recreation has launched a Really Simple Syndication (RSS) news feed to share its program information with local media, community leaders, and customers. The news feed's address is http://www.MilwaukeeRecreation.net/news.xml.
A news reader (or aggregator) is required to receive and view RSS news feeds. Popular news readers include NewsGator, My Yahoo, and FeedDemon. News readers provide a fast and convenient way to consolidate and access information from a variety of organizations. Like most RSS providers, Milwaukee Recreation is offering a free subscription to its news feed. RSS feeds allow individuals to access content without providing an e-mail address or any personal information.
EDIT: Check out our other feed entitled "What's New to the Web Site." The address is http://www.milwaukeerecreation.net/home.xml.
For Macintosh owners running the latest OS, Milwaukee Recreation has created a branded Widget. Once installed, the specially designed Widget automatically connects with Milwaukee Recreation's RSS feed to deliver news releases straight to the user's desktop. The Macintosh Widget, currently one of only three Milwaukee-specific Widgets, is available for free at Apple Computers' web site.
The RSS news feed and Macintosh Widget are part of Milwaukee Recreation's continual efforts to integrate modern technology with traditional communication tactics. In recent years, the department developed a partnership with the City of Milwaukee to distribute news releases via E-Notify, launched an electronic newsletter (Recreational Reader) which now has over 12,000 subscribers, teamed with MilwaukeeMoms.com, and introduced an on-line registration system.
Media representatives are encouraged to download and publish an image of the Milwaukee Recreation News Widget, available at www.MilwaukeeRecreation.net/Widget.
